Volkswagen Golf V - EGR valve failure - cws. In my experince, once the EGR valves are gummed up it's too late. I had the emissions light come up on a Mk5 1.9TDI we owned - cleaned it/erased the fault code and it was fine for a week but then the problem returned. A new EGR valve cured the problem and around £90 from VW.

Dec 26, 2012. #1. Hi Guys, Does anyone know if it is possible to repair or rebuild the N18 EGR solenoid valve? I am sure that mine has a problem and it seems to me that it would be better to fix it if possible instead of pay $100 to replace it, especially when the only observable effect on the car is the check engine light. Car is 2005 VW Touran (which is based on Golf MK5), whith 1.9tdi PD105 engine. Engine code is BKC. Symptoms are: Car has very low low end power. Power starts to kick in at only around 2300rpm. There are no fault codes. Things get worse when engine fully warms up. Your problem may be that the valve has worn out and cannot close, as this is a fairly common. Replacing a failed EGR is pretty straightforward, though intimidating to a novice mechanic. Valve cover and intake removal is necessary, and the workspace is cramped.
There is a "kit" the dealer is supposed to use that contins the new cooler and one new EGR pipe (and the gaskets and fasteners). When performing the EGR cooler replacement TSB, the new EGR pipe and one of the old EGR pipes are used. So evidently, the included new EGR pipe, although looks similar, is molded slightly different to fit the new cooler.

Well, got a used one yesterday. The old one had 2 chipped gear teeth (ill post pic later). Installed the new one, STILL getting code! This one hasnt blown the 10a fuse but even without the car running, plugged in new one and cleared codes and "MALFUNCTION INTAKE MANIFOLD" still comes up..

After cleaning the egr on a 1.9 pd I suggest that any spray solution will clean less than 5% of the s t out. Mine wasn't particularly bad but still required 30 mins with a screw driver, carb
Mk6 EGR valve and cooler unit, I read, cannot be cleaned unlike the Mk5 ones. With modern fuel, technology and a reasonably looked after vehicle, they are not supposed to need maintenance. Furthermore, in the Mk6 the part is stuck far at the back of the engine such that the labour cost of a repair quoted by a dealer itself can exceed £600. 9uCrVJ.
